FAQs – About Thai National Lottery
Explore common questions and clear answers about the Thai Government Lottery.
The Thai Lottery, officially known as the Government Lottery, is Thailand's national lottery and the only legal form of gambling permitted in Thailand and is administered by the Government Lottery Office (GLO). Draws occur twice monthly, on the 1st and 16th, with pre-printed tickets sold through authorized vendors nationwide.
Anyone can purchase tickets, including foreigners, as long as they are in Thailand and buy from authorized vendors. The minimum age to claim a prize is 20 years. Prizes must be claimed within Thailand.
Thai lottery draws are held on the 1st and 16th of every month. If these dates fall on a public holiday, the draw is usually postponed to the next day. Results are announced in the afternoon, with the live broadcast running from approximately 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM local time.
It’s a simple pre-printed ticket system. Here’s the breakdown:
- Tickets are sold in pairs, and each ticket has a six-digit number.
- Players win prizes by matching their ticket numbers with the winning numbers drawn.
- Prizes are awarded for various categories, including the first prize, second prize, third prize, and smaller prizes like the last two or three digits.
The official price per ticket is 80 THB (Thai Baht). Tickets are sold in pairs, so two tickets with the same number cost 160 THB. However, it's very common to see street vendors selling single tickets instead of full pairs, often priced between 100 - 120 baht per ticket, especially if the number is considered "lucky" or desirable. Although selling above the official price is technically against the law, this practice is common and widely accepted in Thailand's daily lottery sales.
- 1st Prize – 6,000,000 ฿ (1 winner)
- Adjacent to 1st Prize – 100,000 ฿ (2 winners)
- 2nd Prize – 200,000 ฿ (5 winners)
- 3rd Prize – 80,000 ฿ (10 winners)
- 4th Prize – 40,000 ฿ (50 winners)
- 5th Prize – 20,000 ฿ (100 winners)
- Plus many more prizes, such as 4,000 baht for matching the first 3 or last 3 digits, and 2,000 baht for matching the last 2 digits.
(Prizes must be claimed within 2 years of the draw date.)
You can buy Thai lottery tickets from street vendors, market stalls, and walking sellers throughout Thailand. Although not all vendors display a license, most obtain tickets from official sources. You'll receive a physical ticket immediately, which you must keep safe to claim any winnings.
(Tip: Check the draw date and buy from vendors with a GLO ID when possible to avoid scams.)
Thai citizens or residents with a Thai ID and bank account can buy tickets online through the official Pao Tang (เป๋าตัง) app, where tickets are stored digitally and winnings are paid automatically.
Prizes must be claimed within 2 years from the draw date.
Winners of large prizes must claim them in person at the Government Lottery Office headquarters in Nonthaburi. For smaller prizes (typically under 20,000 THB), you may be able to cash out at authorized lottery vendors, though they often charge a small commission. To claim a prize, you must present the original winning ticket along with valid identification, such as a passport for foreigners or a Thai ID card.
(A 0.5% stamp duty is automatically deducted from all lottery prize winnings.)
If a prize isn't claimed within the two-year deadline, the money is turned over to the state to be used as national revenue for public projects.
Yes, the draw is 100% random and transparent, using special air-mix machines. While many people in Thailand love choosing numbers based on dreams or important events, there is no skill or method that can guarantee a win. It's all about luck!
A significant portion of the Thai Lottery's revenue is dedicated to supporting the country. By law, 60% of revenue is allocated for prize money, a minimum of 28% is remitted as state revenue for public and charitable causes, and a maximum of 12% is used for administration and management costs.
Government Lottery Office (GLO)
The Government Lottery Office (GLO) (สำนักงานสลากกินแบ่งรัฐบาล) is the official authority responsible for organizing and managing the Thailand Government Lottery. Operating under the Ministry of Finance, the GLO oversees ticket distribution, conducts official lottery draws, and ensures transparency and fairness in every draw.
The Thai Government Lottery is legally conducted twice a month, on the 1st and 16th. All winning numbers including the 1st prize, 3-digit prizes, and last 2-digit prize are officially issued by GLO.
Lottery revenue supports public welfare, education, and national development projects across Thailand.
